While Labrador is a substantial mainland area, Newfoundland is an Atlantic Ocean island. Approximately 94% of the population resides on the island of Newfoundland, with half concentrated on the Avalon Peninsula.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After a prolonged period of negative population growth, the province experienced positive growth in 2016, attributed to planned programs making it an appealing destination for work migration. The 2016 census reported a population of 519,716, and by 2020, the province&#8217;s population had increased to 522,103.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>St. John&#8217;s, the capital and North America&#8217;s oldest city, is located on the Avalon Peninsula. Colonized by the British in the 1600s, it currently serves as the seat of government and the home of the Parliament of Newfoundland and Labrador. Known for its colorful houses, St. John&#8217;s is the 20th largest city in Canada and houses around 40% of the province&#8217;s population. Other notable centers include Grand Falls, Windsor, and Corner Brook, while traditional villages play a crucial role in the province&#8217;s cultural fabric.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Linguistically, Newfoundland and Labrador are the most homogenous provinces in Canada, with 97.6% of residents listing English as their mother tongue. The energy sector, particularly hydropower with a 5403-megawatt capacity in Churchill Falls, and substantial gas and oil resources, totaling about 615 million barrels, have undergone considerable growth.<\/p>\n<p>The province&#8217;s pristine mountain forests, collective dolphin displays, and floating icebergs serve as attractions that bolster the economy through tourism.<\/p>\n<p>Officially, 222,100 individuals in the province&#8217;s population are employable, yet the unemployment rate stands at 12.5%. This high unemployment rate correlates with lower-than-average family incomes, attributed to the challenges in the fishing industry. With nearly 15,861 active businesses, the province offers opportunities, but the average family income remains lower than the Canadian average, with the minimum wage at 5.12 dollars per hour.
